If I may make a suggestion, since you're making a tutorial about this kind of thing.
Do not shade with black or simply shade with the same hue and saturation with a lower value. Shading with black simply kills the colour in your artwork and makes it all cold and lifeless.
Try varying the hue and saturation of your lower values. When there is colour in ambient light, there is no black shadows.
Not directly black, but you did just turn down the value on your colour without adjusting either the hue or the saturation, which does pretty much the same thing.
Agh, I read my post up above and I sound like such an asshole, sorry
Unlike all the people I know, I have a very old version of Photoshop. So I think I will stick with my coloring style a little longer till I can get my hands on the latest photoshop. Sides the tutorial is old. I failed to mention that in the description. I did it a few months ago. My coloring has gotten better since then. You put the picture I used into the tutorial up against my recent submittion, it looks a whole lot better. Thank you for the link though. I will keep it in mind when I am updated more..

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
